RP Grom destroyer was built in J Samuel White shipyard at Cowes Thanks to the efforts of the Polish Navy HQ two destroyers were contracted at extremely favorable conditions This allowed to reinforce the Polish Navy with two powerfully armed ships named Grom (Thunder) and BA‚yskawica (Lightning) ORP Grom was the first to be commissioned by the Polish Navy on 11 May 1937 The ship was marked with a large white G with black shadow but in 1938 the Polish Navy HQ ordered this type of markings to be overpainted That is why in the photos of 1938-1939 Grom and the sister ship BA‚yskawica cannot be distinguished On 30 August 1939 Polish destroyers ORP BA‚yskawica Grom and Burza (Storm) carried out the Peking plan and sailed to Britain When passing the Sund they encountered German light cruisers but the contact was limited to observation In the afternoon of 31 August two German aircraft started to shadow the Polish force Royal Navy ships were met early in the morning on 1 September On 1 September 1939 the Polish destroyers including ORP Grom remained off Edinburgh-Leith and at night they moved to Rosyth Polish ships were tasked with escort and patrol duties based at Aberdeen
